[Financial News] At least 7 people were killed and 112 injured in a train collision in Egypt on the 8th (local time).
According to France's Agence France-Presse (AFP), the accident occurred in the Al-Ayyat area of Giza Governorate, about 52 km south of Cairo. Local railway authorities said that several cars derailed when the Tahya Misr train bound for Fayoum from Giza struck the rear of a train that had left Cairo and was heading south to Aswan. The collision occurred on the section between Kafr Ammar Station and Al-Alaqa Station.
An eyewitness said that another train struck the Aswan-bound train while it was stopped, overturning six cars. Egypt's Ministry of Health said at least 7 people had died in the accident. It added that 112 injured people were receiving treatment at hospitals in the Giza area and that 45 had been discharged after treatment.
Rescue teams used cranes and heavy equipment to lift the overturned cars and rescue trapped passengers. The injured were reported to have suffered fractures, head injuries, chest injuries and other injuries.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi said he was seriously concerned about the accident and had ordered an urgent investigation. He said those found to have been negligent would be held accountable.
The Al-Ayyat area, where the accident occurred, has also been the site of major rail disasters in the past. In 2002, at least 370 people were killed in a train fire, and dozens died in a train collision in 2009.
