[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump called the outcome of the midterm elections, which ended in a landslide victory for the opposition Democratic Party, a “historically massive setback,” and made clear he would not back down from his existing hard-line policy approach.
In a post on his social media platform Truth Social on the 8th (local time), President Trump claimed, “America has suffered a historically massive setback because of the election results.”
He added, “Even the stock market, which had soared like a rocket under ‘Trump rule,’ suffered a $3 trillion loss in a single day.” The remark took aim at the sharp drop in U.S. stocks as concerns spread that Democrats, who took control of Congress immediately after the midterm elections, would tighten regulations on industries such as artificial intelligence (AI).
But President Trump expressed confidence in a future rebound, telling his supporters, “Don’t be afraid. We will be back. Bigger and stronger than ever.”
Local media and political circles interpret Trump’s remarks as a kind of declaration of war, signaling his intent to push ahead with his policy agenda unchanged in the face of the new Congress, where Democrats hold the upper hand.
Earlier, on the 6th, President Trump made a surprise pick of hard-liner Stephen Miller, a longtime believer in “America First” on issues such as tariffs and immigration, as the new White House chief of staff. The prevailing analysis is that this amounts to a “my way” declaration that he will lead the government in his second term without being deterred by the midterm results.
