[Financial News] The schedule for a meeting of the committee to recommend a Prosecutor General, who will become the first head of the Public Prosecution Office, has been postponed.
According to legal circles on the 8th, the Prosecutor General Candidate Recommendation Committee decided to postpone a meeting originally scheduled for this week.
The committee had been expected to meet this week and narrow the field of candidates to around three. However, the postponement is expected to make a schedule adjustment unavoidable. The committee is reportedly planning to hold the meeting sometime this month.
The postponement is reportedly due to committee members’ individual schedules and the nomination of a candidate for Minister of Justice, among other factors.
The Ministry of Justice received recommendations for Prosecutor General candidates through public nominations over the week from the 14th to the 21st of last month.
Lee Jin-su, Vice Minister of Justice and acting Minister of Justice, is in charge of the appointment process. He will put forward candidates for vetting to the committee from among those recommended, which will assess their qualifications and recommend at least three candidates to Vice Minister Lee. Lee will then select one of them as the final candidate for Prosecutor General and submit the nomination to the president.
The post of Prosecutor General has been vacant for one year and four months since former Prosecutor General Shim Woo-jung stepped down in July last year. Kim Jong-chul, the current deputy chief of the Korean National Police Agency, was tapped to become its chief on the 6th, after that post had also remained vacant for a long time. On the same day, President Lee Jae Myung nominated Lee Yong-cheol, the current head of the Defense Acquisition Program Administration, as a candidate for Minister of Justice.
