[Financial News] LG Electronics has demonstrated its competitiveness in automotive electronics by earning the highest rating under the international standard for automotive functional safety with its vehicle communication control module. The certification recognizes the safety of a key component that connects in-vehicle electronic control units with external communication networks. The company plans to expand supplies of vehicle communication solutions to global automakers.
LG Electronics said on the 8th that it had recently earned certification for its vehicle communication control module at ‘ASIL D,’ the highest level of the international automotive functional safety standard ISO 26262, from global certification body TÜV Rheinland. LG Electronics is the first to receive the highest rating from the agency for a vehicle communication control module.
The vehicle communication control module is a key device that connects multiple electronic control units (ECUs) inside a vehicle and transmits various data, including vehicle status information and control commands. It also connects to external communication networks to support connected-car services such as remote control and over-the-air software updates (OTA).
Because control signals directly related to driving safety, such as braking and steering, also pass through this module, functional safety technology that can quickly detect and respond to errors or failures is critical. During the certification process, LG Electronics met the safety requirements of ISO 26262, from product design and software implementation to functional verification.
ISO 26262 is an international standard established to reduce the risk of accidents caused by malfunctions in electrical and electronic systems installed in vehicles. The Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) classifies systems into four levels, from A to D, based on an overall assessment of the severity and likelihood of accidents and the driver’s ability to control the risk. The highest level, D, requires limiting faults that could lead to an accident to no more than one per 100 million hours of continuous use.
The newly certified module is installed in the ‘GV90,’ GENESIS’s extra-large flagship electrified sport utility vehicle (SUV). Having secured functional safety for a product used in mass-production vehicles, LG Electronics plans to expand its automotive electronics business portfolio, including vehicle communication solutions, for global automaker customers.
Building on its technology and No. 1 position in the global telematics market, LG Electronics is also accelerating the development of vehicle communication technologies. Recently, it became the first in the industry to apply a smart telematics solution based on Release 16 (R16), the 5G mobile communications standard, to a production model from a European automaker. The company also introduced a next-generation hybrid emergency-call system that supports 2G through 5G, in preparation for requirements taking effect next year in Europe, China, the Middle East and other regions mandating the installation of in-vehicle emergency-call systems.
At the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress held last month in Gangneung, Gangwon Province, LG Electronics demonstrated on actual roads an integrated traffic safety solution combining vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and vehicle-to-network (V2N) communications. The technology connects vehicles, road infrastructure and communication networks to share information about surrounding traffic conditions and hazards in real time.
Lee Sang-yong, head of the LG Electronics VS Research Center and a vice president, said, “We will continue to advance the functional safety technologies of automotive electronics products, including the vehicle communication control module, a key mobility technology for the transition to AIDV.”
