U.S. President Donald Trump said on the 7th (local time) that he had ordered the Justice Department to investigate the Democratic Party. He said the Democrats, who won a landslide victory in the midterm elections, were threatening Trump administration officials and Republican donors with impeachment, criminal penalties and other measures.
Trump said on his social media platform Truth Social that day, “The Democrats are threatening to impeach and impose various forms of punishment on many people, including the U.S. attorney general.” He continued, “The victims of this illegal process have neither committed nor even thought about any acts that would warrant impeachment,” and claimed, “The Democrats themselves admit there is no reason to do so.”
“This is extortion of the highest order, and they must be held accountable for it,” Trump said.
He also claimed that the Democrats were threatening Republican donors with various punishments, including imprisonment, because of their political views, saying, “This is another level of weaponization of the justice system and lawfare.”
He also urged Republicans to respond swiftly and singled out Democratic Sen. Elissa Slotkin (Michigan) for criticism. Trump said, “She says she will go after every young person who shows even the slightest sign of believing in Republican values or wanting to become a Republican,” and claimed, “The people who should be imprisoned are these extortionists.”
Trump said Democratic politicians had sent threatening letters to many innocent people, adding, “I am directing the Justice Department to immediately investigate these criminal acts.”
The Democrats, who retook both the House and Senate in the midterm elections on the 3rd, are planning sweeping investigations into Trump administration officials and companies that have been closely aligned with the government.
Rep. Robert Garcia (California), a Democrat considered a frontrunner to become the next chair of the House Oversight Committee, also warned them in a statement on the night of the 3rd to “hire a lawyer.” Some Democratic lawmakers are also raising the need to impeach Attorney General Todd Blanche.
