The death toll from the shooting in downtown Kraków, Poland’s second-largest city, on the 7th (local time) has risen to six.
The death toll had previously stood at five, but rose by one to six. Local authorities said 15 people were injured. The gunman’s identity has not yet been confirmed.
Police responded to a report that the gunman was firing at people from inside a vehicle at the central square in the city center at around 3 p.m. that day. Wearing clothes resembling combat fatigues, the gunman fired a military long gun at civilians, then exchanged gunfire with police while attempting to flee. He was eventually wounded, arrested and taken to a hospital. Two police officers also suffered gunshot wounds in the incident.
Police believe the gunman, a Polish national, acted alone in the shooting. Numerous weapons, including ammunition, were found in his vehicle.
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk set out for Kraków to assess the situation and respond to it.
Kraków is a city of around 800,000 people, located about 250 km south of the capital, Warsaw, and its entire Old Town is designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city draws 15 million tourists a year and is connected to Warsaw by the Vistula River.
The Old Town’s central square, where the incident took place, is considered one of the largest medieval squares in Europe.
