Jang Dong-hyeok, leader of the People Power Party, opposed the so-called “special prosecutor bill on fabricated indictments” and called for the impeachment of President Lee Jae Myung. The People Power Party characterized the bill as a measure to dismiss prosecutions in cases involving the president and stepped up its offensive against the ruling camp.

At a public rally condemning the forced passage of an unjust law to cancel Lee Jae Myung’s trial, held in front of Gyeongbokgung Station in Seoul’s Jongno District on the 7th, Jang said, “For a president with no will to uphold the Constitution, impeachment is the answer.”

Addressing President Lee, Jang accused him of having “defrauded the entire nation” and said, “You are no longer the president of South Korea.” Jang also called for the president’s impeachment and the related trials to resume, saying, “The trials must resume before President Lee erases all of his own crimes.”

Jang also called on the judiciary, including Supreme Court Chief Justice Cho Hee-dae, saying, “If you don’t have the courage to stand up to power, you should take off your robes immediately,” and demanded the immediate resumption of trials related to President Lee.
Floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig criticized the Democratic Party for passing the Special Prosecutor Act for Dismissal of Prosecutions the day before, calling it “an obvious parliamentary coup.” Jeong argued that the bill could create a conflict of interest, particularly because it allows the president to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate cases involving the president.

Some 70 People Power Party lawmakers, including Jang and floor leader Jeong, attended the rally. A preliminary police estimate put total attendance at around 6,000.
