[Financial News] People Power Party floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig criticized the president and the Democratic Party of Korea on the 7th, saying, “The president and the Democratic Party of Korea are committing insurrection against the Republic of Korea.” He was referring to the ruling camp’s forcible ending of the People Power Party’s filibuster (unlimited debate) on the 6th and its push to pass the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution, calling those actions “insurrection.”
Jeong held a “Rally to Condemn the Forced Passage of the Unjust Law to Cancel Lee Jae Myung’s Trial” near Gyeongbokgung Station in Jongno District, Seoul, that day. He said, “The National Assembly has trampled on the separation of powers, the rule of law and the constitutional order of the Republic of Korea in order to erase the president’s trial. This is an unmistakable parliamentary coup.”
Jeong said, “The Democrats claim that a special counsel will expose fabricated prosecutions, but that’s utter nonsense. If an indictment is flawed, the matter should be contested in court. That’s what everyone does. So why is it only cases involving President Lee Jae Myung and his close associates, and former President Moon Jae-in, that are supposed to have fabricated prosecutions exposed through a special counsel?”
He continued, “The Democrats pay lip service to democracy, but in reality they act like monarchists. There has never been such a shameful moment in the constitutional history of the Republic of Korea.” He claimed, “He is trying to make his trial disappear because he is not confident he can win in court or be acquitted.”
Jeong criticized the fact that “the president can appoint the special counsel investigating his own case,” calling it “an obvious conflict of interest and an astonishing paradox in which a criminal suspect chooses the prosecutor.”
He said, “The Special Prosecutor Act for Dismissal of Prosecutions even covers cases that are currently being tried. It denies the judicial authority established by the Constitution.” He added, “This kind of blatant destruction of the Constitution is precisely what is meant by insurrection. The president and the Democrats are committing insurrection against the Republic of Korea.”
Jeong called for the government and ruling party to be held to account in the 2028 general election. He said, “If the Democrats try to erase the president’s trial, then all of the Democrats’ seats should be erased in the next general election.”
He also urged the judiciary to immediately resume the five trials involving President Lee Jae Myung. Jeong claimed, “If the judiciary keeps delaying trials to avoid displeasing those in power, the president will take control of it. The judiciary will become a vending machine dispensing immunity for those in power.”
