CNN reported on the 6th (local time) that the U.S. Secret Service had arrested Venezuelan national Ronny Yordrix Guanipa Chirinos the previous day. He had been behaving suspiciously in a vehicle parked near the White House. He was charged with illegal possession of firearms and unauthorized use of a vehicle.
The investigation found that the vehicle the suspect had been driving had been reported stolen. One rifle, two handguns and dozens of rounds of ammunition were found inside. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the suspect illegally entered the United States in 2024.
The suspect reportedly said at the time of his arrest, “I heard a voice in my head telling me to go to Washington, D.C., and kill President Trump.”
U.S. Secret Service Director Sean Curran said, “This incident shows not only that the threat level has risen in the environment in which we operate, but also that armed individuals continue to converge on the White House.” He added, “We are concerned that these types of threat incidents are increasing, and the Secret Service will make an even greater effort to proactively investigate and identify individuals who pose a threat.”
This is not the first time a firearms-related incident has occurred near the White House. Last May, a man with a history of mental health issues opened fire on Secret Service agents at a White House security checkpoint and was fatally shot at the scene.
