[Financial News] An apartment notice asking residents to refrain from showering or using washing machines after 10 p.m. has sparked debate online.
Recently, a photo of a notice believed to have been written by a resident of an apartment building was posted on Threads, a social networking service (SNS).
The notice said, “There are households that keep using water from 10 p.m. until midnight, and even at 2 or 3 a.m. You can hear washing machines, water pouring from showerheads, and tap water running in sinks. If it weren’t nighttime, I could put up with it even if it went on for a long time. Washing up and getting things in order at the end of the day is normal, but the sound of water in the middle of the night is incredibly loud to neighbors, like a waterfall.”
It went on, “The sound of young children running around in the early evening would seem almost endearing compared with this water-bomb noise,” and urged residents, “I’m saying this because apartments are vulnerable to noise between floors, and we should all be considerate of one another. I hope we can be considerate after 10 p.m.”
A netizen believed to have written the notice claimed, “I’m not saying people shouldn’t shower. The upstairs neighbors make thumping, hammer-like footsteps, scraping-chair noises, and sounds of fighting all day long. They go in and out of the bathroom dozens of times a day, and from daytime through the evening, until 3 a.m., they keep turning the water on and off with a racket in the bathroom, so I keep waking up.”
They continued, “The upstairs neighbors stay home all the time and don’t go anywhere—not just on weekdays, but throughout weekends and school vacations—so there isn’t a quiet day, with banging and the sound of water all day long. I want to sleep, at least in the evening, but they keep turning the water on and off until 3 a.m. It’s driving me crazy. I can’t tell them not to, but the people downstairs are really suffering,” they vented.
Netizens who heard about the situation shared opinions such as, “Does this mean people who get off work in the early hours aren’t even allowed to wash up?”, “If you’re going to nitpick about everything, you shouldn’t live in an apartment,” “Not everyone lives by the same routine,” and “If you’re going to complain even about basic household noise, you should live in a detached house.”
Other netizens, however, responded, “Isn’t the point to live considerately with one another? People who make noise don’t understand what consideration means, and because it’s a habit, they never realize they’re at fault,” “In shared housing, it’s common sense to be as quiet as possible in the early hours,” and “This is the reality: residents are fighting among themselves over something the construction company should be taking the blame for.”
