[Financial News] U.S. President Donald Trump reaffirmed his full support for the artificial intelligence (AI) and data center industries, pushing back against calls for AI regulation by Democrats that have gained momentum since their landslide victory in the midterm elections.
According to the Associated Press and other foreign media on the 6th (local time), Trump said that day on his social media platform Truth Social, “As president, I 100% support superintelligence (SI, the alternative term for AI that Trump uses),” adding, “I will work with states across the United States that want to become wealthy by adopting SI.”
He went on to stress, “Data centers and superintelligence are like gold. Only foolish leaders say ‘no’ to the enormous wealth they will bring.”
The remarks directly targeted Democrats, who won a landslide in this midterm election after pledging to strengthen data center regulation. Democrats capitalized on voters’ frustration that data centers’ massive power consumption drives up electricity bills and adds to the environmental burden, winning in key areas including Texas and Ohio. As a result, the prospect of measures to halt or pause construction of new data centers in the United States has grown more likely to become a reality.
In fact, the previous day, fears of AI regulation led by Democrats swept through the New York stock market. The Nasdaq plunged nearly 5.5%, its worst drop in 19 months, and major AI-related stocks fell across the board. Trump responded by saying, “Remember, this is the fault of the ‘Dumocrats’ (Dumocrat, meaning a stupid Democrat), not the Republicans,” shifting responsibility for the market plunge to the opposition party.
Despite concerns about power shortages in local communities, Trump maintains that large-scale investment in data centers is essential to winning the race for AI supremacy with China. He also dismissed calls from some in the tech industry to slow the pace of AI development as “a hoax and conspiracy that only benefits China,” and claimed that attracting data centers would create local jobs and lower taxes.
