[Financial News] Actor Kim Soo-hyun will appear as a witness in the trial of Kim Se-ui, head of the Garo Sero Research Institute, who was indicted on charges of defaming him.
According to legal sources on the 6th, the 26th Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court, presided over by Judge Lee Hyun-kyung, plans to summon Kim Soo-hyun as a witness at the hearing scheduled for the 11th in the case against Kim Se-ui, who faces charges including violations of the Act on Promotion of Information and Communications Network Utilization and Information Protection and the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes.
As the charges include a violation of the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment, etc. of Sexual Crimes, the witness examination is expected to be held behind closed doors.
Kim Se-ui was indicted while in custody in June this year on charges of spreading false claims through YouTube and other platforms, including that Kim Soo-hyun had dated the late Kim Sae-ron when she was a minor and that pressure from Kim Soo-hyun’s side to repay a debt was the cause of Kim Sae-ron’s death.
He also faces charges of defaming Kim Soo-hyun by circulating AI-manipulated audio of Kim Sae-ron, as well as unlawfully releasing private photos of Kim Soo-hyun and threatening to expose materials related to his private life.
Kim Se-ui denies all the charges. He asked the court to hold a jury trial, but the request was rejected.
He has also applied for bail, citing mental illness and other grounds, and is awaiting the court’s decision.
Bail is a procedure by which a court releases a defendant being tried from detention, subject to payment of a security deposit or other appropriate conditions.
