[Financial News] Cooperation to extend Korea’s AI-based traffic-control technology and smart-city operational experience to ASEAN markets is moving into full swing. AI traffic-management solutions and multi-lane Hi-pass technology developed by Korean companies were introduced to government and standards-agency officials from nine ASEAN countries, and ways to pursue joint standardization were explored. The aim is to go beyond technology exchange and expand the foundation for Korean ITS companies to enter overseas markets.
ITS Korea said on the 6th that it ran a technology exchange and standards cooperation program in the smart city and ITS fields at the “2026 Korea-ASEAN Standards Cooperation Network Workshop,” held in Seoul from the 2nd to the 6th.
The workshop was organized by the Korean Agency for Technology and Standards under the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to expand standards cooperation between Korea and ASEAN countries. A total of 10 countries, including Korea, took part, and around 10 experts from government agencies and standards bodies in the nine ASEAN countries, including Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia, attended.
The main agenda was standardization of AI-based traffic-management technology and smart transportation infrastructure. At the technical seminar, Korean companies Raonroad and Nota AI, along with Korea Expressway Corporation, presented domestic ITS technologies and real-world applications, including AI traffic control, traffic safety, and multi-lane Hi-pass.
Raonroad showcased technology for collecting and monitoring traffic data, as well as a digital-twin-based AI traffic-management solution. The technology analyzes traffic flows using data collected in real-world road environments and supports efficient operations.
Nota AI introduced an AI-based ITS solution used for monitoring traffic conditions, detecting unexpected incidents, and managing pedestrians. Korea Expressway Corporation shared its experience building and operating intelligent transportation services in Korea, including multi-lane Hi-pass.
The ASEAN officials also visited traffic-control facilities in Korea. They toured Seoul’s Transport Operation and Information Service (TOPIS) and Korea Expressway Corporation’s traffic control center, where they learned about the operating systems and use of technology for key services, including public transportation monitoring and integrated real-time traffic management.
At the workshop, the association assessed each country’s demand for ITS technology and the potential for standards cooperation, and discussed ways to establish a medium- to long-term cooperation framework. It plans to identify areas for standardization that can be pursued jointly in light of each country’s transportation infrastructure and technological environment, and to expand exchanges among experts.
The aim is to establish a basis for Korean ITS companies to bring their technologies and services to ASEAN markets. In particular, the association expects to broaden cooperation with ASEAN countries by drawing on Korea’s experience in building transportation systems and its AI-based operational technology.
Heo Cheong-hoe, chairman of ITS Korea, said, “International cooperation on standards between countries and the sharing of technological and operational experience are important to the global expansion of ITS technologies and services. This workshop was a meaningful occasion to share Korea’s ITS capabilities and standardization experience with ASEAN countries and to explore future directions for cooperation together.”
He added, “We will continue to promote standards cooperation and technology exchange between Korea and ASEAN, and to strengthen the foundation for international cooperation so that the outstanding technologies and services of Korean ITS companies can reach ASEAN markets.”
