K-water said it was re-elected as the chair institution at the 26th AWC Board meeting held in Bangkok, Thailand, on the 6th. Its three-year term begins this month.
The AWC is a platform for addressing water issues in Asia and fostering international cooperation, with 194 member institutions from 28 countries currently taking part. Since leading the council’s establishment in 2016, Korea Water Resources Corporation has served as its chair institution and the institution responsible for operating its secretariat.
Through the Asia International Water Week (AIWW), it has discussed water-management issues and responses in various countries and pursued cooperative projects involving governments, international organizations and private companies. In May last year, it obtained accredited-entity status in the water sector from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and in February this year, it signed a strategic partnership with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP) to strengthen capacity to respond to water challenges and climate change.
K-water plans to expand cooperative projects to address water issues in Asia by leveraging networks among member institutions. It will promote water-management solutions incorporating AI and digital twins, and help domestic water companies identify overseas business opportunities.
President Yoon Seok-dae said, "We will continue to contribute to solving global water issues through cooperation platforms such as the Asia International Water Week, and faithfully fulfill our role as a bridge so that the outstanding water technologies of domestic water companies can reach overseas markets."
