[Financial News] A diagonal crosswalk has been installed at the intersection in front of the rear gate of Yangwon Forest Elementary School in Jungnang-gu, Seoul. The measure is intended to improve pedestrian routes and prevent traffic accidents involving children.
Seoul Jungnang Police Station said on the 6th that it had installed a diagonal crosswalk at the intersection near the rear gate of Yangwon Forest Elementary School.
According to police, concerns about jaywalking had repeatedly been raised at the intersection, where many students heading to school crossed the street by cutting across the roadway. Senior citizens working as traffic-safety volunteers guided students across safely, but there were limits to how much they could do to prevent all jaywalking.
In response, the Jungnang Police Station Traffic Division inspected the site and observed students’ actual walking routes and the flow of vehicle traffic. The division then submitted a proposal to install a diagonal crosswalk to the police station’s Traffic Safety Deliberation Committee, which approved it, and installation was completed on the 3rd.
A diagonal crosswalk allows pedestrians to cross an intersection diagonally in one go, helping shorten pedestrian routes and reduce situations where the paths of vehicles and pedestrians overlap.
An official with Jungnang Police Station said, “We plan to continue identifying and addressing shortcomings in traffic safety facilities in child protection zones to help prevent traffic accidents involving children.”
