[Financial News] Korea National Railway has become the first public institution in Korea’s social overhead capital (SOC) sector to declare its participation in the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). It will set greenhouse gas reduction targets aligned with international standards and strengthen the management of emissions generated during railway construction and facility management.
According to Korea National Railway on the 6th, the declaration was made to strengthen the implementation framework for achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The SBTi is an international collaborative initiative that supports and validates companies’ greenhouse gas reduction targets to ensure they align with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting the rise in global average temperatures to 1.5°C.
Alongside its declaration of participation, the agency also held a lecture to improve employees’ understanding of carbon neutrality. Julian Quintart, a Belgian broadcaster and environmental activist, spoke on the theme “The Future Our Choices Can Change,” introducing the importance of responding to the climate crisis, the role of railways, and carbon-reduction activities that can be practiced at work and in everyday life.
Earlier, last month, the agency implemented a “Carbon Neutrality Action Pledge” with all employees taking part, among other efforts to broaden the foundation for action within the organization.
Chair Jeong Jin-hyeok said, “This declaration of participation in the SBTi is a meaningful first step toward launching the development of greenhouse gas reduction targets aligned with international standards in earnest and translating them into concrete actions and results.” He added, “Going forward, we will continue to take the lead in achieving national carbon neutrality and spreading an eco-friendly management culture, based on the expansion of eco-friendly railway infrastructure and the voluntary efforts of our employees.”
