[Financial News] “At drinks, people say they should shift into overseas stocks, but it’s hard to bring that up openly.”
As the domestic stock market continues to struggle and enthusiasm for investing in overseas stocks grows, securities circles in Yeouido are taking care with even a single remark on the subject. They are concerned that such comments could be seen as encouraging clients to move their assets overseas.
According to the securities industry on the 7th, a consensus has long taken hold among sales and wealth management (WM) staff at securities firms that they need to choose their words carefully even when discussing market outlooks or investment demand related to overseas stocks. Matters that attract particular investor interest, such as investing in unlisted foreign companies or subscribing to public offerings, are said to be treated with even greater sensitivity.
An industry official said, “In private settings, talk of overseas stocks comes up naturally because the domestic market is frustrating, but in media interviews or official remarks, we can’t help weighing every word,” adding, “There’s a tendency to avoid expressions that could be interpreted as marketing overseas stocks.”
When the domestic stock market swings, overseas stocks also become a topic of conversation. The more people talk about the state of the domestic market, the more overseas stocks come up as well, but securities circles appear to be weighing the tone and wording of remarks on the subject.
An industry official said, “The more interest there is in investment products tied to overseas companies, the more expectations and concerns grow,” adding, “Since even ordinary remarks explaining market conditions can be read in different ways, these days in Yeouido, people hold back from speaking all the more in formal settings.”
