[Financial News] The Busan Metropolitan Police Agency said on the 6th that a comprehensive review of relationship-related crimes such as stalking and domestic violence, conducted over two weeks from the 19th to the 31st of last month, found a total of 2,726 cases, including 263 classified as high-risk.
The comprehensive review included 2,475 cases that had already been subject to review, including ongoing investigations, people subject to high-risk monitoring, stalking reports closed at the scene, and cases in which safety measures were underway. The total also includes additional reports received during the review period.
Of the 1,050 relationship-related crime cases under investigation, 263, or 25%, were classified as high-risk. For high-risk perpetrators, the agency applied for 19 arrest warrants, 33 detention orders, and 19 electronic monitoring devices, among other measures.
Compared with the results of the comprehensive review of relationship-related crimes conducted last March, which covered 1,787 cases in total, including 167 high-risk cases, the number of cases subject to review and those classified as high-risk had risen sharply in about seven months. Police explained that the number of cases recorded had increased because they conducted a more thorough review than in the previous comprehensive inspection.
Among the 1,328 cases involving “Grade A” subjects—those with two or more incident reports filed in the past three years—police launched preliminary investigations into 15 cases in which they identified additional risks, and took additional safety measures in 10 cases. They also reviewed all 317 stalking cases closed at the scene and began preliminary investigations in 15 of them, among other follow-up measures.
In one case, Busanjin Police Station tracked down and arrested a perpetrator who went to threaten a former partner while emergency measures for stalking were still in effect. The station combined the case with an ongoing investigation and had the perpetrator taken into custody. Saha Police Station also took up a case in which a person inflicted special bodily injury after suspecting his wife's infidelity. It additionally applied a previous charge of special intimidation and applied for and obtained an arrest warrant.
Busan Metropolitan Police Agency Commissioner Kim Seong-hee said, “We will thoroughly review cases involving high-risk perpetrators of relationship-related crimes, adhering to a policy of zero tolerance and a strict response, and make every effort to ensure that victims receive protection that citizens can see and feel.”
