According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the 6th, Minister Choi Hwi-young presented a letter of appointment to the new chair, Kwon, that day at the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Jongno-gu, Seoul.
Kwon, the new chair, was born in 1955 and graduated from Seoul National University's Department of English Language Education. Kwon earned a master's degree from Hanyang University's Graduate School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Kwon has served as newsroom chief, editorial writer and editor of The Hankyoreh; CEO of The Huffington Post Korea; and a board member of the Korean Broadcasting System (KBS). Kwon chaired the Foundation for Broadcast Culture from 2021 through this year.
Minister Choi said that as the transition to artificial intelligence (AI) advances, forms of media are diversifying and demand for the media's social role is growing. He added, "I hope that, with the new chair taking office, the Korea Press Foundation will lead changes in the media industry and create a media environment trusted by the public."
The foundation, launched in 2010 through the merger of three organizations—the Korea Press Foundation, the Newspaper Development Committee and the Newspaper Distribution Agency—is classified as an "other public institution." It carries out projects to promote the media industry, including handling government advertising, strengthening journalistic capabilities, providing media education and operating the Korea Press Center. It also manages and operates the Press Promotion Fund and the Regional Newspaper Development Fund.
