[Financial News] Sony Korea said on the 6th that it would unveil the wired headphones MDR-3R, a modern reinterpretation of the design and heritage of its original Walkman headphones, the MDR-3.
The MDR-3 was a pair of headphones released alongside the first Walkman, the TPS-L2, in 1979. It is regarded as a model that helped usher in a portable audio culture in which people could listen to music anytime, anywhere. With wireless audio devices now commonplace, Sony has brought the convenience of wired headphones—connecting to a device and using them without separate charging or Bluetooth pairing—to its new model.
Blue and orange ear pads complement the original design
The MDR-3R carries over the original model’s design and lightweight, airy open-back construction while adding modern features such as a USB-C connection and a microphone for calls. When connected to a compatible smartphone or other device that supports USB-C audio output, the headphones let users enjoy music and video content without a separate charging or pairing process.
The MDR-3R evokes a classic feel based on the original’s iconic design. It comes with ear pads in iconic blue and orange, allowing users to change their style to suit their tastes or mood. The packaging and user manual also incorporate design elements from the original model, carrying on its heritage.
The original’s characteristics are reflected in the fit, too. The MDR-3R recreates the MDR-3’s lightweight, airy open-back construction and is designed to remain comfortable even during long listening sessions.
The sound is built around a 23-mm driver unit, the same as in the MDR-3. The audio has been finely tuned with modern listening environments in mind while preserving the identity of the original model. Sony says its natural, balanced sound lets users enjoy music across a wide range of genres.
USB-C connection, microphone and inline remote added
The MDR-3R uses a USB-C port instead of an analog jack. It can be used immediately when connected to a device that supports USB-C audio output, without separate charging or Bluetooth pairing. It also features a built-in microphone for calls and an inline remote, allowing users to answer calls while listening to music or control key functions.
Environmental considerations have been incorporated into the product materials and packaging. About 25% of the plastic used in the headphones is recycled plastic, and no plastic is used in the packaging. Sony said it had made efforts to reduce environmental impact from the planning stage through to packaging.
A Sony Korea spokesperson said, “The MDR-3R is a pair of headphones that reinterprets the philosophy and feel of the long-loved Walkman to suit how people use devices today, while preserving its spirit. We expect it to bring a welcome sense of nostalgia to consumers who remember the original model, and a fresh enjoyment of listening to music to a new generation.”
