On the 6th, the Car of the Year Selection Committee under the Korea Automobile Journalists Association said it had shortlisted and evaluated five new models launched last month—the Lexus All-New ES, Volvo ES90, Genesis GV80 Hybrid, Zeekr 7X and Hyundai Motor Company’s All-New Hyundai Tucson—and that the ES90 scored 56.3 out of a possible 70 points.
The seven judging categories, each worth 10 points, were design and emotional quality; driving performance and energy efficiency; safety and advanced driving technology; infotainment and connected systems; space utilization and practicality; price competitiveness and product value; and overall product competitiveness and purchase appeal. The ES90 scored 8.7 in each of the price competitiveness and product value category and the overall product competitiveness and purchase appeal category. It scored 8.3 for safety and advanced driving technology, and 8 points each for design and emotional quality, and driving performance and energy efficiency.
Won Sun-woong, chair of the Car of the Year Selection Committee, said, “The ES90 is a model that reinterprets, in the language of the electrification era, the value of the ‘Scandinavian luxury sedan’ that Volvo has built through its 90 Series. The 520km range under Korea’s certification standards and the 350kW-class ultra-fast charging enabled by a maximum 106kWh battery and Volvo’s first 800V architecture have clearly improved efficiency and convenience for real-world long-distance use.”
The association selects a Car of the Month from among new cars and facelifted models launched between the first and last days of each month. This is the second such case, following the Porsche Cayenne Electric last month. Selected vehicles receive the distinction of advancing directly to the first round of final judging for Korea Car of the Year (K-COTY), bypassing the first- and second-half evaluations. The association has selected a Car of the Month since 2019.
Founded in 2010, the association counts 60 media outlets—including newspapers, broadcasters, news agencies, online media and automotive magazines—as members, and has around 200 active reporters.
