[Financial News] Concerns have been raised that Hanbok is being labeled and sold as the Chinese traditional garment “Hanfu” on the Chinese e-commerce platform AliExpress.
On the 6th, Professor Seo Kyoung-duk of Sungshin Women’s University shared the information on social media (SNS), saying, “Korean Hanbok and Chinese Hanfu are distinctly different garments.”
Professor Seo pointed out that although AliExpress mostly just provides sellers with a sales channel, it should have been more vigilant and used its own monitoring to prevent this from happening.
According to Professor Seo, Kimchi, a traditional Korean food, had previously appeared in AliExpress search results alongside “Paocai,” a Chinese-style pickled vegetable.
He suggested that Hanbok and Hanfu, and Kimchi and Paocai, be placed in separate categories to prevent foreigners from misunderstanding them.
He added, “A truly global company should first and foremost have the attitude of respecting other countries’ cultures,” and said he would continue working with Koreans around the world to correct the distorted way Korean cultural products are sold on major shopping platforms in countries around the world.
