[Financial News] A man’s story has emerged after he discovered that his wife had been secretly sending 800,000 won a month from his salary account to her mother for living expenses for more than four years.
On the 4th, a post titled “My wife was using my salary account to pay her family’s living expenses” appeared on the online community Nate Pann.
The author, Mr. A (41), who has been married for 12 years, began by saying, “My wife has managed the money since we got married. I do installation and repair work on-site, so I often get home late, and I don’t like dealing with numbers, so I left it to her.”
Mr. A, who said he had covered the cost of cigarettes and lunch with a monthly allowance of 400,000 won, reportedly installed a banking app for the first time last month to get documents for his year-end tax settlement.
He confessed, “I was just trying to pull up the transaction history when I scrolled down and saw 800,000 won going out every month on the 5th in my mother-in-law’s name. I checked several months’ worth, and it was the same each time. I kept scrolling back and saw it had been going on for more than four years. When I added it up, it came to nearly 40 million won.”
He continued, “That evening, I asked my wife, ‘What’s this?’ At first she looked taken aback, then said, ‘So you expect my mother to go hungry?’ When I asked why she hadn’t told me, she said, ‘I didn’t tell you because I knew you wouldn’t like it.’” He added, “I know my father-in-law passed away and my mother-in-law lives alone in the countryside. I gave her spending money every holiday, and when her boiler broke, I went down there and fixed it myself.”
Mr. A lamented, “My mother lives alone too. Last year, I brought up the 2 million won cost of dentures, but I gave her only half because I was worried about my wife’s reaction. I can still vividly remember my wife saying, ‘How can we afford 2 million won?’”
He continued, “When I brought that up, my wife cried and said, ‘I’ve raised two kids for 12 years while working part-time, and I put my own money into it too. What do you know?’ She has a point. It’s true that I barely did any housework. But it’s not as if I wasn’t working, either.”
He said, “When I told her I’d take over my salary account, my wife stopped talking to me and hasn’t spoken to me for days. At first I was angry, but now I just feel drained. The fact that she did this behind my back for four years weighs on me more than the money.” He added, “It’s not that I want to cut off my mother-in-law’s living expenses. I just wish she’d told me. Was I wrong?”
People who read the story shared opinions such as, “You’re not going to get divorced, are you? Just go on living your separate lives,” and “Have you talked to your wife about it? Even if you fight and things turn cold, it’s better to be honest and tell her everything.”
