[Financial News] Samsung Electronics and SK hynix are plunging by double digits in premarket trading. Concerns about tighter data center regulations and cuts to artificial intelligence (AI) investment have mounted since the U.S. midterm elections, fueling panic selling in semiconductor stocks.
At 8:31 a.m. on the 6th, Samsung Electronics was trading at 179,900 won, down 21,600 won (10.72%) from the previous trading day. SK hynix stood at 1.1 million won, down 164,000 won (12.97%). During the session, Samsung Electronics fell as low as 175,300 won and SK hynix as low as 1.07 million won.
Overnight, the PHLX Semiconductor Sector Index (SOX) plunged 12.25% in U.S. trading. Micron (-17.46%) and AMD (-17.26%) fell sharply, while Broadcom (-10.43%) and Nvidia (-9.26%) also slumped.
The prospect of tighter data center regulations came into focus after Democrats took control of both the House and Senate, while developments including Micron’s halt to construction of a factory in Taiwan fueled concerns about cuts to AI investment. The concern is that restrictions on new data center projects could also weigh on demand for AI infrastructure, including memory.
Some analysts, however, say panic selling has been excessive even though concrete regulations and a decline in demand have yet to be confirmed. Han Ji-young, a researcher at KIWOOM Securities Co., Ltd., said, “Given that the specific scope of regulations, whether projects will actually be delayed, and any decline in AI demand have yet to be confirmed, the plunge in AI stocks in the U.S. market appears largely to be a panic-driven sell-off.”
