[Financial News] Busan’s Suyeongro Church is helping children and families affected by flooding in Nepal get their lives back to normal with donations raised by its congregation.
The Korean Committee for UNICEF said on the 6th that Suyeongro Church had donated 10 million won to the committee the previous day for emergency relief in Nepal. The funds were raised through the “Good Offering” at special early morning prayer meetings held three times a year.
Suyeongro Church has supported local communities and vulnerable people in Korea and abroad through the Good Offering. The latest funds will be used to provide drinking water and hygiene supplies, health, nutrition and psychosocial support, and temporary learning spaces for affected children and their families.
Flooding in Nepal last August affected about 84,000 people, including about 32,000 children. An initial assessment released by UNICEF last September found that more than 14,000 children at 62 schools and learning facilities in affected areas had experienced disruptions to their education.
UNICEF has vaccinated about 68,000 people against cholera and provided drinking water to about 27,000 people locally. It has set up 52 temporary learning spaces to support the education of more than 1,500 children and has also provided school supplies to about 5,800 people.
Rev. Lee Gyu-hyeon of Suyeongro Church said, “We joined together with our congregation to bring hope to children in Nepal who lost their homes and livelihoods in the sudden disaster,” adding, “I hope this will help children facing hardship get back to their daily lives as soon as possible and once again experience the joy of learning.”
Heo Geum-ju, secretary-general of the Korean Committee for UNICEF, said, “We will provide all the support needed on the ground so that the heartfelt support you have sent can become a source of hope for the children’s recovery and future.”
