[Financial News] Kim Gura’s son Gree (whose real name is Kim Dong-hyun), a television personality, shared how he bought a car with savings he accumulated during his military service and discussed his stock investment results.
Gree appeared as a guest on the sixth episode of E Channel’s variety show “Seo In-young’s Trendy Old Fogey,” which aired on the 5th, and talked about personal finance with Seo In-young and Mimiminu.
Gree, who completed his mandatory service in the Marine Corps in January this year, began by saying, “I’ll be 30 next year.”
Mimiminu asked, “These days, many service members save their pay through what’s called a ‘military savings plan’ (the Military Tomorrow Preparation Savings Plan),” adding, “I heard you saved quite a lot.”
Gree said, “If every soldier saves up to 550,000 won a month throughout their service, they leave with about 20 million won. I saved about 20 million won too.” He added, “I bought a car with that money,” drawing attention.
Seo In-young asked, “Didn’t you give your parents spending money?” Gree joked, “They have a lot. Much more than I do. I’d have to serve in the military 50 times to catch up with my father’s money,” drawing laughter.
He also shared an experience of making a substantial profit from stock investments. Gree said his return on a stock investment had once reached as high as 300%, and that a stock he bought for 60,000 won in the past is now quoted at 1.2 million won, astonishing everyone.
He had an unexpected response to his father Kim Gura’s investment advice. Kim Gura is one of the entertainment industry’s best-known personal finance enthusiasts. Last May, he said the return on his long-held Samsung Electronics shares was about 524%. He had also previously disclosed that the assessed value of gold he bought for about 110 million won had risen to 340 million won.
Gree said, “He’s so active that it seems he runs into quacks, too. The quality of the information is so different,” and joked, “Sometimes I wonder if I’m a child he picked up.”
He also spoke about the size of Kim Gura’s fortune. In a video posted on his YouTube channel on the 30th of last month, Gree visited a matchmaking agency. Asked about his father’s wealth, he said he did not know the exact amount but chose the “5 billion to 10 billion won” and “10 billion to 30 billion won” brackets, drawing attention.
