Major foreign media outlets reported on the 5th local time that the Democrats plan to use the investigative authority they gained in both chambers through their midterm victory to focus on the Trump family’s cryptocurrency and real estate businesses, as well as dealings between the administration and private companies.
The Democrats won back both the Senate and the House in the midterm elections held on the 3rd. As the election results came in, leading Democratic lawmakers issued a series of warnings to the Trump administration.
Representative Robert Garcia, a Democrat expected to become the next chair of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, posted on social media platform X on election night: “Hire a lawyer.” Senator Ron Wyden, who is expected to become the next chair of the Senate Finance Committee, posted a brief message an hour later: “Subpoenas.” Representative Delia Ramirez warned senior Trump administration officials to “clear your calendars.”
The Democrats have already begun selecting specific targets for investigation. Wyden said he would investigate agreements on drug prices reached between the Trump administration and pharmaceutical companies.
The investigations are likely to expand beyond President Trump’s family to major Republican donors and private companies. Reuters reported that, based on interviews with about 12 people, including lawyers, members of Congress, congressional aides and political consultants, those expected to be investigated include Tesla CEO Elon Musk; President Trump’s eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., and second son, Eric Trump; major Republican donors; and federal contractors.
The cryptocurrency and real estate deals pursued by the Trump family are being singled out as major targets for investigation. The Democrats are expected to closely examine whether President Trump’s private business interests influenced government policy decisions.
The Democrats are understood to have chosen a strategy of increasing political pressure through wide-ranging congressional investigations rather than immediately pursuing impeachment of President Trump.
Some analysts say the Democrats’ ultimate goal is to cast not only Trump but also the entire administration and Republican Party as corrupt, giving themselves an advantage in the 2028 presidential election. The Democrats may also investigate how Republicans handled information related to the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The White House strongly opposed the Democrats’ investigation plans. White House spokesperson Lauren Bis criticized them, saying, “If the Democrats pursue fake investigations and radical left-wing policies, they will be choosing a path that runs counter to the interests of the American people.”
Some have warned, however, that the Democrats could face a backlash if they focus too heavily on corruption investigations. That is because voters considered high prices and the cost of living their most important concerns in this midterm election.
Experts said it is important for the Democrats to choose their investigation targets strategically. Since the White House is likely to resist investigations by invoking executive privilege, one option under consideration is to investigate private companies first, as they have relatively limited legal defenses.
