[Financial News] Rep. Joo Jin-woo of the People Power Party has been sued for alleged defamation by President Lee Jae Myung's eldest son after raising allegations of “imperial golf” involving the president's family.
According to legal sources on the 5th, President Lee's eldest son, Lee Dong-ho, filed a defamation complaint against Rep. Joo with the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency that day.
Recently, Rep. Joo held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Center and alleged that President Lee, his spouse, and their eldest son Lee Dong-ho and his spouse had played golf together at Hansandae CC inside the Jinhae Naval Base during the president's summer vacation in August last year. He also released what he claimed was a photo of a helicopter parked at the helipad at the time.
In response, Lee said in his complaint, “I did not go to Hansandae CC during the summer vacation, nor did I play golf there.” He alleged that Rep. Joo had publicly stated falsehoods, damaging his reputation.
Attorney Lee Jae-hong of Gangmul Law Office, the legal representative for the complainant, said, “Before being the president's son, the complainant is a private individual who performs no public duties.” He added, “Even if the president's family's vacation were considered a matter of public interest, continuing to stir up controversy by publicly naming a private individual through press conferences, social media and YouTube broadcasts without verifying the facts goes beyond the bounds of political criticism.”
