[Financial News] Hope Friend Hunger Countermeasures and LG Electronics supported projects to address local problems proposed directly by residents, including beekeeping and improvements to the educational environment in Kenya and securing water supplies in Peru.
According to Hope Friend Hunger Countermeasures on the 5th, the two organizations held the '2026 LG Ambassador Challenge' from March to October in five countries: Vietnam, Peru, Bangladesh, the Philippines and Kenya.
The projects were selected through a call for proposals from residents, who were also given the lead in carrying them out. The selection process reflected local characteristics and residents’ needs, focusing on the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of ending poverty, quality education and climate action.
In Kenya’s Nandi region, beehives and beekeeping equipment were provided to 30 households, and residents were trained in honey-production techniques. The aim is to help them establish a source of income, with a target of producing around 1,500 kilograms of honey annually.
Computer and science labs were set up at Siiluni Primary and Secondary School in the Machakos region, expanding access to science and digital education for 390 students. The facilities were also made available to 200 students from nearby schools.
In Lima, Peru, the 'Water Supply Project Using Fog-Collection Nets' was selected for support for the third consecutive year. The project uses the area’s low rainfall and frequent fog to secure water for household and agricultural use.
A fog-collection net is a device that gathers tiny droplets from windblown fog using a mesh. It collects water using wind and gravity, so no external power is needed.
After supplying household water to 85 local households in 2024, the project expanded its support last year to include kitchen gardens irrigated with the collected water and guinea pig farming. This year, too, it supported residents in securing food and building a foundation for self-reliance.
“True change does not come from relying on external support; it begins when local communities have the capacity to solve problems themselves,” said Park Chan-wook, head of the ESG Sharing Division at Hope Friend Hunger Countermeasures.
