[Financial News] Professor Kwak Su-ryang of the Department of Convergence Bioengineering at Kookmin University has been recognized for his world-class research impact. Kookmin University said on the 5th that Professor Kwak had been named to the “World’s Top 2% Researchers 2026” list, jointly announced by Stanford University in the United States and global academic publisher Elsevier. The list is compiled using the global research database Scopus and ranks researchers through a comprehensive assessment of the number of citations their papers receive and their influence.
Professor Kwak has pursued interdisciplinary research combining computational analysis techniques and biotechnology to develop gut microbes and functional biological materials. His representative work includes scientifically demonstrating the effectiveness of treatments that restore patients’ gut ecosystems and using yeast to enhance components that support gut health.
Professor Kwak Su-ryang said, “I am pleased that the achievements built through the joint efforts of the students in my lab and the collaborative research team have been recognized,” adding, “I will focus on clinical validation and connecting our work with industry so that the microbes and materials developed in the lab can lead to real improvements in people’s health.”
Professor Kwak’s research team is currently developing “customized beneficial bacteria” to help treat specific diseases and studying precision fermentation technology to produce high-value materials used in health functional foods and pharmaceuticals. The team is also developing next-generation antimicrobial technology that supports the activity of beneficial gut bacteria while selectively controlling only harmful bacteria.
Kookmin University has designated bio as one of its eight specialized fields and concentrated its research capabilities in the area, and expects this achievement to create synergies with the university’s mid- to long-term development plan.
