According to gaming industry sources on the 5th, Kakao Games Corp. has been moving one after another to implement the key management initiatives outlined by its new leadership at its second-quarter 2026 earnings announcement, doing so in about 130 days. The company is stepping up its business overhaul, focusing on restoring the competitiveness of its game business, improving its financial structure and securing new growth drivers.
‘Dokkaebi’s World,’ a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) launched on October 8, has become a hit, lending momentum to the company’s new-release-led recovery strategy. Developed by Supercat and published by Kakao Games Corp., the game topped Google Play’s revenue charts just five days after launch. Its early success is attributed to a monetization structure that eases the burden on users and user-friendly operations.
Kakao Games Corp. plans to extend the success of Dokkaebi’s World to overseas markets. It is working toward a launch on Steam, the global mobile and PC gaming platform, in the second quarter of next year. The company aims to build an overseas player base on the strength of the game’s proven appeal in Korea and develop it into a long-running intellectual property (IP).
More new releases are on the way. ‘Odin Q: Valkyrie’s Call,’ currently in development at Lionheart Studio, is scheduled to launch simultaneously in Korea, Taiwan and Japan in January next year. Expanding the universe of the hit game Odin: Valhalla Rising, it features high-quality graphics and quarter-view combat. The original Odin: Valhalla Rising is also seeking to expand into overseas markets after recently securing the foreign-game publishing license required for service in China.
The PC MMORPG ‘ArcheAge S: Straits of Freedom,’ based on the core IP ArcheAge, is also in development, with a launch targeted for next year. It aims to carry on the original’s high degree of freedom and player-to-player interaction while improving convenience for long-term service.

The company is also expanding its partnerships with external developers. ‘Path of Exile 2,’ developed by global game developer Grinding Gear Games, is set for its official launch on December 12. Kakao Games Corp. is preparing localization and service operations for users in Korea. In July, it signed a domestic and international publishing deal with Kong Studios for the collectible action role-playing game (RPG) ‘Guardian Maiden.’
Alongside strengthening its game business, the company is also fleshing out its shareholder-return policy. In July, Kakao Games Corp. retired 500,000 shares, equivalent to about 60% of its treasury shares. At an extraordinary shareholders’ meeting in August, it approved a proposal to reduce capital reserves and transfer them to retained earnings, securing funds for future shareholder returns.
The management team, including co-CEOs Kim Tae-hwan and Lee Si-woo and the chief financial officer (CFO), also completed purchases of company shares worth a total of 500 million won. A compensation program granting restricted stock units (RSUs) to employees is being prepared for its first rollout early next year, linked to year-end performance reviews. The aim is to strengthen responsible management by aligning the interests of executives and employees with efforts to enhance corporate value.
The company is also accelerating M&A to secure new revenue sources. Backed by about 900 billion won in cash and cash equivalents, Kakao Games Corp. is considering investing in companies with viable businesses and profitability. To broaden its business into social casino games, casual games and mind sports, among other areas, and expand its revenue base in North America and Europe, the company decided in September to acquire global gaming company Me 2 On Co., Ltd. It plans to complete the acquisition in the fourth quarter of this year, following relevant procedures including a business combination review.
Strategic investment in artificial intelligence (AI) is also continuing. Kakao Games Corp. recently invested in BackendX, a company that automates AI-based backend development and operations, and Eyes Entertainment, an AI social platform company.
