[Financial News] A man in his 40s who drove a passenger car into a first-floor restaurant in a commercial building while heavily intoxicated abandoned his car at the scene and fled, but was later caught at home.
On the 5th, Hanam Police Station in Gyeonggi Province said it had booked A without detention on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and failure to take action after an accident).
A is suspected of driving his electric passenger car into a restaurant on the first floor of a building in Deokpung-dong, Hanam City, at around 5:17 a.m. that day, then leaving the scene without taking any action.
Because it was early morning, the restaurant had not yet opened and no one was injured. However, A’s car reportedly smashed through a window and drove into the store, damaging fixtures and other property.
Police responded to a report that “a passenger car had crashed into a commercial building” and found A’s wallet and ID inside the car he had abandoned at the scene, allowing them to identify him. Police then went to his home and found A asleep there at around 6:17 a.m., one hour after the accident.
A had sustained minor bruising from the impact of the crash and reportedly admitted at the scene to both drunk driving and the accident. Investigators determined that there had been no passengers in the car at the time.
The investigation found that A’s blood alcohol concentration when he was apprehended was at a level warranting license revocation (0.08% or higher).
Given the time gap between when A actually drank and when the accident occurred, police plan to use CCTV footage from the place where he drank, among other evidence, to apply the Widmark Formula and calculate his exact blood alcohol concentration while driving, before investigating the circumstances of his drinking and the route he took.
