Local media report a hit-and-run by a large cargo truck; obituary posted for ‘Jin Sseurebeul’
On the 5th, a commenter on a video on the YouTube channel ‘Jin Sseurebeul’ posted an obituary, saying they were Cho’s acquaintance, Lee Young-jun, and had the family’s consent.
Lee wrote that Cho was killed after being hit by a large cargo truck while riding his bicycle in El Alto, Bolivia, on the morning of the 4th local time.
Earlier, Bolivian broadcaster Unitel, citing El Alto traffic police, reported that a 33-year-old Korean national riding a bicycle in El Alto was hit by a large cargo truck and died at the scene at around 9:30 a.m. on the 4th.
The report did not name the victim, but after the news broke, speculation emerged on South Korean online communities that it could have been Cho. The reason was that a YouTuber who documented bicycle trips had traveled from Peru to Bolivia, and was also 33 years old.
Local police said the truck driver left the scene immediately after the crash, but was caught and detained several hours later. The driver stated that he had not seen the cyclist, and no alcohol was detected in a test for alcohol impairment.
YouTuber who cycled around the world ... Embassy preparing funeral arrangements
Cho launched his YouTube channel in 2020 and has since posted videos documenting his bicycle journeys, beginning with a trip around South Korea and continuing across Europe, Africa, North America and elsewhere. The channel has about 66,000 subscribers.
For the past year, he had been continuing his journey across Latin America, starting in Mexico. The last video Cho uploaded to the channel, on the 30th of last month, showed a bicycle trip through the Peruvian Andes.
Lee said they were preparing funeral arrangements locally with staff from the South Korean Embassy in Bolivia, and that the schedule and details on how to pay respects would be announced on the channel once they were finalized.
Lee asked anyone familiar with the situation in Bolivia or able to help the bereaved family to get in touch through a KakaoTalk open chat. Messages wishing the deceased peace have been posted in the chat room.
Lee also said the family was in deep mourning and urged people to refrain from sharing unverified speculation or videos and photos of the accident.
Local police are reportedly investigating the circumstances of the accident.
No official post has yet been published by the channel’s operating account or in the family’s name.
