【Financial News, Jeju — Reporter Jeong Yong-bok】 Twenty young people from around the world will gather in Jeju this December to propose practical ways to address the climate crisis and promote sustainable tourism.
According to Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and Jeju Tourism Organization on the 5th, the finals of the “Promise with Jeju Global Youth Ambassadors” event will be held in Jeju Dec. 6–8. Participants will give presentations on climate action and eco-friendly ecotourism and take part in programs to experience Jeju’s natural environment.
The project was created to expand the “Promise with Jeju” campaign to young people overseas. The campaign promotes the conservation of Jeju’s natural environment and mutually beneficial relationships with local communities.
“Promise with Jeju,” a sustainable tourism campaign launched in 2024, is guided by the core values of conserving the natural environment, living in harmony with local communities and respecting Jeju culture. This year, Jeju Island and Jeju Tourism Organization also ran an action program involving 18 tourism businesses and village enterprises on the island.
The youth ambassador selection will take the form of an English-language presentation contest. Young people aged 15 to 24 from around the world may enter by submitting a two- to three-minute video in English on the theme “My Promise for a Sustainable Planet and Travel.”
Videos may cover environmental problems experienced where participants live or travel, challenges that the tourism industry and local communities need to address together, and eco-friendly travel practices that can be adopted in everyday life.
Applications for the online preliminary round will be accepted through Nov. 11, and 20 finalists will be announced on the 13th. Selected participants will receive certificates appointing them as global youth ambassadors, issued by Jeju Tourism Organization.
The in-person final in Jeju will be held Dec. 7 in an “open mic” format. Participants will take the stage to present their climate action plans and eco-friendly tourism ideas.
The three top finalists will receive a total of $4,200 in prize money (approximately 5.63 million won): $2,000 for the grand prize, $1,500 for the top prize and $700 for the excellence award.
Bunker des Lumières, an immersive media-art exhibition hall in Seongsan-eup, Jeju, will also take part in the project. The plan is to connect the environmental conservation message of Pink Bubble: Into the Light, a special exhibition presented by Omaieoseu, a climate and environmental cultural-content company, with young people’s climate action.
The special exhibition, running from the 3rd to the 10th of this month, uses video and light to depict the cycles of glaciers and the sea, the atmosphere and life. It uses interactive technology that changes the visuals in response to visitors’ movements and participation to portray the recovery of a polluted planet.
Bunker des Lumières, the exhibition venue, was converted into a cultural space from a former facility of the national backbone telecommunications network. During the December event, the youth ambassadors plan to visit, experience the venue’s history and environmental message, and create content about Jeju’s nature and responding to the climate crisis.
Jeju Tourism Organization plans to promote content created by participants overseas and organize climate action experiences and local tourism promotion activities. The project focuses on connecting international youths’ proposals with practical efforts in Jeju’s tourism sector.
Omaieoseu CEO Kim Dae-il said, “It is meaningful that the message of the Pink Bubble exhibition, which uses art to raise public awareness, will spread into concrete action through the Promise with Jeju Global Youth Ambassadors project.”
