【Financial News, Yeosu = Hwang Tae-jong, reporter】Yeosu City welcomed the government’s decision to establish a medical school at Sunchon National University, saying on the 5th that “a university hospital should be established in the Yulchon area and a regional trauma center set up to improve healthcare access for residents of the eastern part of Jeonnam-Gwangju.”
Given the close ties between Yeosu, Suncheon and Gwangyang in terms of daily life and industry, the city believes the university hospital should be developed as a regional medical hub serving residents of all three cities and workers at industrial complexes.
The city argues that the Yulchon area is a suitable site for the university hospital because it is close to the Yeosu Industrial Complex and major industrial complexes in Suncheon and Gwangyang, allowing emergency patients injured in industrial accidents to be transported and treated quickly. Yeosu Mayor Seo Young-hak said, “I hope the achievement made possible by the region’s united efforts will lead to medical infrastructure that protects citizens’ lives and safety,” and stressed, “I will work closely with the relevant agencies to ensure that, with a university hospital established in the Yulchon area, all residents of the eastern region—including industrial complex workers and island residents—can receive quality healthcare.”
He also said that a regional trauma center should be established within the university hospital so that patients with severe trauma and burns at industrial sites can receive specialized treatment in a timely manner, and that a system should also be built to rapidly transport and treat emergency patients from island areas using medical helicopters and other means.
Meanwhile, Yeosu City has worked with the Yeosu-Suncheon-Gwangyang Cities Administrative Council and the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City Eastern Region Coexistence Council to jointly call for the establishment of a medical school and university hospital and the expansion of essential and emergency medical infrastructure, among other measures, helping improve the local healthcare environment.
