Police said on the 5th that Seoul Eunpyeong Police Station arrested a man in his 60s, identified as A, at around 8 a.m. that day on suspicion of murder, at a multi-family residence in Bulgwang-dong, Eunpyeong-gu, Seoul.
Police received a report at around 6:40 a.m. that day that B, a woman in her 70s, was missing. Based on the location of B’s cellphone and her previous reports, among other information, they identified the residence of A, her former partner, and found B dead inside the home.
A was found unconscious at the time and taken to a hospital. It has yet to be determined how B came to be at A’s home.
A had previously been investigated by police on suspicion of stalking B, according to reports.
Seoul Mapo Police Station received a report from B on July 18 and, on July 20 of the same month, sought an arrest warrant for A on suspicion of violating the Act on Punishment of Stalking Crimes and other charges. However, the prosecutor did not seek the warrant from the court, so A was not taken into custody.
Instead, police sought provisional measures and held A in a detention center from July 23 to August 22. After he was released, they tracked his location using an ankle monitor until the 22nd of last month.
But B was found dead about two weeks after the period of ankle-monitor use ended.
Police plan to investigate the precise motive and circumstances of the crime once A’s treatment is complete.
