[Financial News] Korea Maritime & Ocean University (KMOU) pledged to take a leap forward as a world-class university specializing in maritime studies as it marked its 81st anniversary.
KMOU said on the 5th that it had held a ceremony marking its 81st anniversary on the 4th at Kim Kang-hee Hall in the new library building, one day before its founding anniversary.
The event was attended by prominent figures from political and government circles and the maritime, port and business sectors, including President Ryoo Dong Keun, Alumni Association President Lee Yun-cheol, National Assembly member Cho Seung-hwan, former Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Moon Seong-hyeok, Yeongdo District Council Chair Shin Seong-hwan, Busan Regional Office of Oceans and Fisheries Chief Heo Man-uk, and Busan Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Yang Jaesaeng.
The ceremony proceeded with an anniversary address, congratulatory remarks, a reading of the Sea Charter, a keynote speech, awards for an academic conference, and citations recognizing long service and outstanding members.
In his anniversary address, President Ryoo said, “Since its founding in 1945, the university’s achievements in leading Korea’s maritime development are thanks to the dedication of its alumni, faculty and staff, and students, as well as the support of the local community.” He stressed, “Amid a declining school-age population and a rapidly changing higher education landscape, the time has come for all members of the university to pool their wisdom and capabilities to help it become a world-class university specializing in maritime studies, reaching beyond the local community and the nation.”
He added, “Building on solidarity and cooperation with the local community, we will stand tall as a center of global maritime innovation, going beyond Korea.”
Meanwhile, before the anniversary ceremony, the university also held a completion ceremony for the central park’s 5,435-square-meter lawn plaza. The newly renovated central park has a lawn plaza, shaded rest areas, sculptural benches and landscape lighting, and was developed as a place for students, faculty and staff to relax and connect.
Founded in 1945, Korea Maritime & Ocean University has contributed to training maritime professionals and advancing the nation’s maritime industry. As it marks its 81st anniversary, it is preparing to take a new leap forward as a university leading the global maritime sector.
