【Financial News, Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop, Staff Writer】Achievements under the Gangwon Special Act, whose special provisions have loosened restrictions in four areas—farmland, forests, the environment and military affairs—will be presented to the public at the heart of the National Assembly.
According to Gangwon State on the 5th, the province will operate a promotional booth for the Gangwon Special Act at the 2026 National Assembly Legislative Expo, which is being held from the 5th through the 6th on the Central Lawn and elsewhere within the National Assembly grounds. The booth's theme is “Making Gangwon special and its residents happy through the Gangwon Special Act.”
At the booth, the province will share the results of four key special provisions in the areas of farmland, forests, the environment and military affairs, long regarded as obstacles to regional development. It plans to explain in a way accessible to visitors how the special provisions secured through revisions to the Special Act, which took effect when the province was launched in June 2023, are being applied in practice. The province will also outline its policy direction: identifying new special provisions while actively using those already secured to bring about changes residents can feel, including business investment and job creation.
The exhibition is organized into three sections in line with Governor Woo Sang-ho's vision for provincial administration: Clean, Youth and Peaceful Gangwon. The “Growing the Value of Clean” section presents ways to increase local income through eco-friendly energy and tourism while protecting nature, alongside special provisions for forests, farmland and the environment. The “Creating Opportunities for Youth” section shows how special provisions for future industries and research and development can support business attraction and industrial growth, portraying a Gangwon where companies come, young people work and settle down.
The “Opening Up the Possibilities of Peace” section highlights the development potential of border areas long constrained by regulations, drawing on special provisions for military and border regions. It also introduces ways to revitalize local communities by easing inconveniences for residents and boosting tourism.
Programs that visitors can participate in directly have also been prepared. At the “Happy Gangwon, What Do We Need?” corner, anyone can offer policy ideas for the future of Gangwon State. An event offering souvenirs to those who follow the province's official social media account will also be held.
Jo Yeong-ho, director of the province's Special Autonomy Bureau, said, “This is an opportunity to let the public know that Gangwon, once constrained by regulations on farmland, forests and military affairs, is finding a way forward through the Special Act.” He added, “What matters is not how many special provisions the act contains, but how much residents' lives change. We will continue to identify new provisions and connect those already secured to business investment and jobs for young people.”
