According to the United Kingdom’s Financial Times (FT) on the 4th (local time), conservative-leaning Fox News, owned by the Murdoch family, founders of News Corporation, identified U.S. President Donald Trump as the cause of the Republican Party’s midterm defeat.
Anchor Sean Hannity, one of President Trump’s most prominent supporters, answered, “100% yes. There is no doubt,” when asked, “Do you think the election result would have been different if President Trump had not waged the Iran war?” Host Laura Ingraham, also considered a Trump supporter, likewise said of the Iran war, “It was really difficult, and it wasn’t properly explained, either.”
President Trump made no secret of his displeasure with Fox News’ changed tone. As he watched Fox News on election night, he repeatedly criticized its hosts on social media.
The day after the election, Murdoch-owned newspapers all blamed President Trump for the midterm defeat.
The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), in an editorial published shortly after the election, called President Trump “the person responsible for engineering the Republican Party’s defeat.” It criticized him, saying, “After returning to the White House, President Trump was erratic and self-centered,” and that he “squandered an opportunity to reform and advance conservative politics in America.” It added, “The Republican Party should begin discussing what comes after Trump.”
In addition, the New York Post featured on its front page a massive blue tsunami, symbolizing the Democrats, engulfing President Trump. It also ran the headline, “Trump faces historic reckoning... Democrats win a midterm landslide.”
A former senior News Corporation executive, commenting on Murdoch-owned outlets all turning to criticism of President Trump, said, “Murdoch doesn’t want to be with losers.” The executive added, “Murdoch is no longer interested in Trump. He’s only interested in viewers.”
