[Financial News] As the ruling bloc sought to force the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution through the National Assembly plenary session, People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok criticized the move on the 5th, saying, “It will be a special counsel to cancel the regime, not to dismiss indictments.”
Jang held a Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly that day and said, “After the Democratic Party unilaterally rammed it through the Legislation and Judiciary Committee yesterday, it is openly saying it will ram it through the plenary session today at the speed of light,” he said.
Jang criticized the bill, saying, “It is neither a bill related to people’s livelihoods nor one to revive the economy. It is a bill to save just one person, Lee Jae Myung,” and added, “It looks like they are going to turn the regular session into a shield parliament, as they did last year.”
Regarding the Democratic Party’s claim that it had removed the special counsel’s power to dismiss indictments, he said, “People already know all too well that even without a provision for dismissing indictments, there are eight, ten, even twenty ways to do it.”
He added, “Wasn’t the very purpose of creating this law to dismiss indictments?” and stressed, “All that remains now is to twist the chief of the Prosecution Office’s arm to get him to dismiss the indictments.”
Floor leader Jeong Jeom-sig said the party would counter with a filibuster (a legal obstruction of proceedings through unlimited debate) if the Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution was brought before the plenary session.
Floor leader Jeong said, “The Democratic Party insists on calling this a Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution, but that is deceitful manipulation of language,” adding, “If the prosecution was truly fabricated, they should contest it in court and secure an acquittal.”
He went on to strongly criticize the Democratic Party, saying, “The Democratic Party is turning the Republic of Korea, a democratic republic, into an absolute monarchy,” and, “The Democratic Party, which cries out for democracy while acting like royalists, will remain the worst disgrace in the history of the constitutional order.”
Floor leader Jeong said, “The People Power Party will fight back against this. We will begin with a filibuster right away,” and added, “We will mobilize every means and method. If we are blocked in Yeouido, we will take to the streets, join the people in stopping this heinous coup, and make sure Lee Jae Myung stands trial.”
