[Financial News] Safety and environment officials from LG affiliates shared industrial workplace safety solutions using artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics. Cases were presented in which AI was applied to safety and environment work, from detecting hazards to controlling equipment and analyzing workers’ postures and safety-related documents.
Beyond CCTV detection: AI takes control of equipment and transforms safety work
LG said on the 5th that it held its group-wide safety, health and environment conference, ‘LG SHEC’ (pronounced “Shek”), for two days starting on the 4th at LG Sciencepark in Magok, Seoul. Launched in 2023, the event is designed to share safety and environment management expertise among affiliates and strengthen the capabilities of those responsible for it. It was held for the fourth time this year.
This year’s theme was ‘Drive the Shift.’ As industrial workplaces rapidly change with the AI transformation (AX) and robotics transformation (RX), the theme called for work practices in safety and environment to evolve with these changes and be put into practice on site.
Some 350 safety and environment officials from 16 companies, including LG, LG Electronics, LG Display Co., Ltd., LG Innotek, LG Chem Ltd., LG Energy Solution, LG Household & Health Care, LG Uplus Corp., LG CNS, D&O and HSAD, attended the event. They accounted for about 10% of all LG safety and environment officials. Twenty officials from overseas sites, including those in the United States, China, India and Poland, also attended in person. The event was livestreamed online, and AI interpretation services, including Chinese and Vietnamese, were provided.
Of the 21 innovation cases shared this year, 15 used AI. Cases were presented showing AI put to practical use in safety management, safety governance and culture, operational safety, and health and environment.
LG Electronics presented an integrated monitoring system that connects 4,226 CCTV cameras at domestic sites and construction sites through an in-house-developed AI solution. The system does more than detect hazardous situations; it directly controls equipment. When a hazard arises, it stops equipment or restricts access and broadcasts a warning. For example, it cuts the power if it detects a worker while painting equipment is operating.
LG Uplus Corp. developed an app to support telecommunications construction partners in conducting ‘risk assessments’ to identify hazards and countermeasures before work begins. When a partner enters job information, AI identifies hazards and suggests mitigation measures, as well as preparing materials for pre-work safety meetings. The company said the risk assessment levels of 21 partner companies rose by 27% after the app was introduced.
Expert lectures and a safety knowledge contest; six exemplary workplaces selected
External experts also gave lectures. Oh Sang-rok, president of the Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KIST), and Kim Dai-sik, a professor at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), among others, spoke on changes in AI and robotics, industrial safety policy, and employee mental health.
Ten affiliate-level first-place finishers who passed preliminary rounds using the ‘LG SHEC 200 Questions,’ distributed in advance, advanced to the final of the safety and environment knowledge contest ‘Master SHEC.’ Participants tested their safety and environment knowledge by answering job-related case questions that asked how they would respond to workplace situations.
LG assessed accident prevention efforts, capability building and safety management levels at production and manufacturing sites, and selected six as ‘2026 LG Group Exemplary Safety and Environment Workplaces,’ awarding them plaques and prize money.
An LG official said, “Now, as AI technology advances and the way we work changes alongside it, we have an opportunity to raise our safety and environment management standards to the next level. We will support the spread of the innovations shared at this event to each workplace and create places where everyone can work with peace of mind.”
