[Financial News]  Former Prime Minister Kim Boo-kyum criticized the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), saying, “We are being scolded by younger generations because of our arrogance.”
According to the Chosun Ilbo on the 4th, former Prime Minister Kim made the remarks that day at a book concert celebrating the publication of “The Era of the Democratic Party,” co-hosted by the private think tank Sunwoojae and the DPK’s Seoul chapter at the National Assembly Museum.
Former Prime Minister Kim said, “Since President Kim Dae-jung’s time, we have never once given up the precious values of the parallel development of the market and democracy, peace on the Korean Peninsula, human rights, autonomy and decentralization. Even so, I think we still haven’t been able to answer the questions many people are asking: ‘So how has my life improved?’ and ‘They say AI (artificial intelligence) is coming and changing the world—how are we going to respond?’”
He continued, “This isn’t something to be resolved through competition with the forces of industrialization,” adding, “I feel a sense of regret that perhaps our thinking—‘We were a little better than them,’ ‘We were more moral’—is why we are being chastened by younger people today for our arrogance.”
He emphasized, “Our community is in crisis now. Our DPK is a servant who carries an eternal burden. The DPK has no right to be insolent, arrogant or haughty.”
“The Era of the Democratic Party” is a book that traces the policies of four DPK administrations—from the governments of Kim Dae-jung, Roh Moo-hyun, Moon Jae-in and Lee Jae Myung—and examines how each administration responded to the crises of its time. It was co-written by Jo Dae-yeop, standing representative of Sunwoojae; Yoon Tae-beom, a professor in the Department of Public Administration at Korea National Open University; Chu Jang-min, an emeritus research fellow at the Korea Environment Institute (KEI); and Park Jeong-min, a professor in the Department of Social Welfare at Korea National Open University.
Meanwhile, attendees at the event that day included National Assembly Speaker Cho Jeong-sik, former National Assembly Speaker Moon Hee-sang, presidential special adviser for political affairs Kim Kyung-soo, and former senior presidential secretaries for political affairs Choi Jae-sung and Lee Cheol-hee. Kim Min-seok, the DPK leader, and former leader Jeong Cheong-rae, who were on the attendee list, did not show up.
