[Financial News] ‘Look Back,’ about the friendship between two girls who draw comics, and ‘White Shoes,’ which explores the wounds of the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion through a family’s history, have been chosen as November’s recommended print comics.
According to the Korea Cartoonists Association on the 5th, its affiliated Cartoon Culture Research Institute selected the two works as November’s ‘Print Comics of the Month.’ Creator G Movie recommended ‘Look Back,’ while cartoonist Mikkang recommended ‘White Shoes.’
Tatsuki Fujimoto’s ‘Look Back’ tells the story of Ayumu Fujino and Kyomoto, who dream of becoming manga artists. Ayumu Fujino, who draws four-panel comics for the class newspaper, loses confidence after seeing Kyomoto’s drawings. As they grow closer while working together, the two inspire each other and grow.
G Movie said, “As someone who also creates content every day, I closed the last page and sat at my desk for quite a while.” The live-action film ‘Look Back,’ directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda and based on the manga, was released domestically on the 8th of last month.
Kim Keum-suk’s ‘White Shoes’ deals with the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion, in which civilians were killed in Yeosu, Suncheon and elsewhere in 1948. It portrays, through the story of one family, a time when people were arrested and taken away for wearing white shoes. Kim, who is from Goheung, retraced that period starting from her own family history and drawing on testimony from bereaved families, interviews with researchers, site visits and documentary records.
The book was published on the 19th of last month, the 78th anniversary of the outbreak of the Yeosu-Suncheon Rebellion. Mikkang explained the reason for recommending it, saying, “If more people hear about it and remember it, even now, perhaps some of the grief built up through a long silence can be eased.”
Since 2023, the association has introduced two works each month from among comics published in Korea that have artistic merit and have attracted attention. It has received support from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism since last year, and this year began appointing people from various fields to its recommendation committee.
The selected works will be featured in turn on the association’s website, social media (SNS) and Aladdin’s feature page. Follow the association’s Instagram account and leave a comment about what you’re looking forward to, and you could win one of the recommended books in a prize draw.
