[Financial News, New York — Byung-chul Lee, correspondent] Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leader in the U.S. Senate, vowed to mount strong checks on President Donald Trump after Democrats recaptured both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections, saying, “We have gained the power to check a president who wants to be king.” He said he would focus on lowering Americans’ cost-of-living burden regardless of whether Trump cooperates, and described the election result as “a generational reshaping of the balance of power in the Senate.”
At a press conference on the 4th (local time), following the election, Schumer said of the results, “The Democratic Party secured in Congress the power to check someone who wants to be king, as the Founding Fathers intended.”
His remarks reflected the view that voters’ resentment toward President Trump and his policies had led to the Democrats’ victory in the election. They also signaled that congressional checks would intensify during the remaining two years of Trump’s term, now that Democrats control both chambers.
Asked whether he was willing to work with President Trump starting next year, Schumer avoided a direct answer. Instead, he stressed, “We will work hard. Whether the president cooperates or not, we will do everything we can to lower the cost of living. That’s all.”
He cited the Democrats’ persistent focus on issues voters actually care about as the key to their victory in the election. In particular, he explained that Democratic candidates had made the cost-of-living burden, political turmoil and corruption central to their campaigns.
He also identified the strategy of recruiting candidates as a key factor in the victory. Schumer said the party had secured strong candidates by actively persuading even those reluctant to run, in order to improve its chances of winning in traditionally Republican strongholds.
He stressed, “Whether it’s Iowa, South Carolina or Texas, this victory will make an enormous difference,” adding, “This is a generational reshaping of the Senate's majority-party landscape.”
In the election, Democrats reclaimed Senate seats in traditionally Republican strongholds, including Texas, South Carolina and Iowa. The Democratic victories spread to areas where Republicans had long maintained an advantage, marking a significant shift in the U.S. political landscape.
In his victory speech the previous day, Schumer also criticized Republicans, saying, “They made their choice and followed Trump off a cliff,” and, “We listened to the people, but they did not.”
He added, “The American people demolished the Republicans’ solid red wall and turned it into a pile of bricks.”
However, he also stressed that Democrats should not rest on their laurels. Schumer said, “The American people voted for change,” adding, “Now the Democrats must deliver tangible results.”
