On the 4th (local time), Vice President Vance said on X, his social media platform, “The reason we lost was the war,” adding, “The president himself said so last night.”
He stressed, “If you want to argue that the war was worth it even at the cost of losing the Senate for the next six years, go ahead,” adding, “Whether you agree or disagree, at least that is an honest position.”
He continued, “But everyone knows why we lost,” adding, “An honest discussion about where we should go from here has to start right there.”
President Trump also acknowledged that the Iran war had contributed in part to the Republican Party’s defeat. However, while saying that rising oil prices caused by the war had become a political burden, he maintained that he did not regret the decision to go to war and would make the same decision if faced with the same situation again.
In this midterm election, the Democratic Party recaptured both the Senate and the House of Representatives. As calls within the Republican Party to assign responsibility for the causes of the defeat gain momentum, Vice President Vance’s direct singling out of the Iran war is expected to intensify debate over future foreign policy.
