[Financial News] Gustav Klimt reworked a painting that had won a gold medal at the 1911 International Art Exhibition in Rome. He covered the gold background of the work, known as “Death and Life,” with gray, and made the skull, which had been bowing its head, look toward the figures opposite it in the painting.
Docent Lee Ji-an's first solo-authored book, The Museum of Twelve Nights, follows the lives of 12 painters who lived through Europe's Belle Époque from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. The book also introduces Suzanne Valadon, who worked as a model for painters in Paris's Montmartre, and Vilhelm Hammershøi, who often painted his wife from behind.
The book is structured around meeting one painter each night at an art museum at midnight. The author, who worked as an art therapist, explores how the loss and loneliness experienced by the painters are reflected in the colors and composition of their paintings. It includes about 150 works.
