A Medieval Dictionary for Time Travelers / Ian Mortimer / Willbook
[Financial News] A smallholder in 14th-century England might have considered a house with plenty of firewood stacked outside the door beautiful. In A Medieval Dictionary for Time Travelers, historian Ian Mortimer reconstructs everyday life at the time by inviting readers to imagine themselves traveling through the Middle Ages.
Drawing on records from the period, including household inventories and food prices, the book explores clothing and diet, lodging and hygiene. A passage noting that monks enjoyed listening to minstrels play the harp also offers a glimpse of medieval leisure. The book includes around 40 illustrations.
Iraha, creator of the webtoon Daily Dose of Sunshine, came across the original while preparing a work set in the Middle Ages. Iraha took on the translation together with Yo-orang. The two checked the sources cited by the author in the University of Oxford’s online library and added translators’ notes explaining unfamiliar expressions and the historical context.
