【Financial News, Chuncheon = Kim Gi-seop, reporter】Chuncheon's first city-run nursing home dedicated to dementia care has opened, offering 100 older adults with dementia a place to live while receiving specialized care.
According to Chuncheon City on the 4th, the city held an opening ceremony that day at 'Peaceful Garden,' its city-run nursing home specializing in dementia care, built in Seoksa-dong. Around 100 people attended, including Mayor Yuk Dong-han, city and provincial council members, and heads of related agencies. It is the first city-run facility dedicated to dementia care to open separately from the existing Chuncheon City Nursing Home.
'Peaceful Garden' comprises a nursing facility with capacity for 100 people and a day-and-night care facility for 40. The nursing facility is already operating, while the day-and-night care facility is scheduled to open next year, making care available to older adults who live at home as well.
A total of 15.4 billion won was invested in the facility. It has one basement level and two above-ground floors, with a total floor area of 3,101 square meters. Construction began in November 2024 and was completed in April this year. It is operated by Dongbu Diakonia, a social welfare corporation.
The city is also expanding its community dementia-care network alongside the nursing home's opening. Through its Dementia Care Center, it has offered early screening, management of high-risk groups, cognitive enhancement programs, and support for families of people with dementia. It currently operates Dementia Safe Villages in two locations: Geodu 2-ri in Dongnae-myeon and Sinsau-dong. The city has distributed trackable smart tags to older adults at high risk of wandering or going missing, and plans to continue linking prevention and care so that people with dementia can live safely in familiar neighborhoods.
Mayor Yuk said, "The starting point of care is protecting the lives and daily routines they have nurtured throughout their lives." He added, "We will share responsibility as a community to make this a place where 100 older adults can live comfortably and with dignity, and where families caring for them at home can trust and rely on this place when the day-and-night care facility opens next year."
