[Financial News] People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyeok went on the attack on the 4th, targeting both the Democratic Party of Korea (DPK)’s push for the “Special Counsel Act on Fabricated Prosecution” and President Lee Jae Myung’s real estate policy. On the bill, he called for “resumption of the trial before withdrawal of charges,” and criticized the real estate policy as “real estate sadism.”
In a Facebook post that day, Jang said of the DPK’s tabling of the bill at the National Assembly’s Legislation and Judiciary Committee: “‘Saving Lee Jae Myung’ is the No. 1 state priority. ‘Lee Jae Myung’ comes before ‘the people,’ and ‘withdrawal of charges’ comes before ‘people’s livelihoods.’”
Jang also called the DPK’s decision to remove the provision that had sparked controversy over withdrawal of charges “an outright lie,” saying, “All sorts of workarounds are already in place.” He added, “If they never intended to withdraw the charges in the first place, why have a special counsel?” and criticized the plan, saying, “It could come to the point where the defendant appoints the prosecutor who will investigate his own case.”
Jang also raised the issue of the suspension of President Lee’s criminal trial. He said, “This is the absurd thing that happens when the trial is put on hold,” and stressed, “‘Resumption of Lee Jae Myung’s trial’ must come before ‘withdrawal of charges against Lee Jae Myung.’ That is the people’s mandate.”
At a lawmakers’ meeting the previous day, the DPK adopted the bill as its official party position and decided to remove the relevant provision to dispel controversy over its involvement in withdrawing charges. It plans to pass the bill at a plenary session on the 5th, following review by the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 4th.
In a separate post, Jang also criticized President Lee’s real estate policy. In response to Lee’s remarks about falling transaction prices in major areas of Seoul, Jang said, “He has effectively admitted that the goal of his real estate policy is to crack down on Gangnam,” and claimed, “Prices have risen ‘to a surprising degree’ everywhere except Gangnam—even in Gyeonggi Province and Incheon.”
He continued, “Listings surged because people had no choice but to sell their homes under a tax bomb, and transactions plunged because lending was completely tied up.” He criticized the policy, saying, “Every one of these things is a source of hardship for the people, but for President Lee Jae Myung, it is something to boast about.” He added, “At this point, it’s ‘real estate sadism,’” and said, “The administration will collapse at a remarkably rapid pace.”
Earlier, President Lee said at a Cabinet meeting on the 3rd that transaction prices in major areas of Seoul were falling sharply. After some media outlets pointed to rising home prices in areas outside the three Gangnam districts, Lee responded on X on the 4th that he had never said home prices across Seoul were plunging.
