[Financial News] NAVER Pay (Npay) has received international recognition for the safety of the biometric data protection framework used in its facial-recognition payment service. Its security has been verified across the entire process, from collecting facial data to storing and disposing of it, making this the first such case in Korea.
According to industry sources on the 4th, NAVER Pay recently obtained ‘ISO 24745’ certification. Its official designation is ‘ISO/IEC 24745:2022,’ an international standard for the protection of biometric information, jointly established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).
The standard was established to protect biometric information during the storage and transmission of data by services that handle sensitive biometric information. Certification is granted following a comprehensive assessment of the overall system, safeguards related to biometric information, internal policies, and confidentiality, integrity and availability.
The safety of the biometric data processing framework used by NAVER Pay’s facial-recognition authentication and payment service, Facesign, has been officially recognized as meeting an international standard. It is also the first such case in Korea.
Facesign is facial-recognition technology developed in-house by Naver. It was designed to process biometric information as safely as possible, with personal information protection as its top priority throughout the process, from collection and processing to storage and disposal.
The service uses anti-spoofing technology that applies an artificial intelligence (AI) deep-learning model to determine whether a face is genuine and prevent security threats. In particular, post-quantum cryptography (PQC) has been proactively applied to data transmission across all NAVER Pay services, including Facesign, to ensure that facial data is stored and managed securely.
NAVER Pay CEO Park Sang-jin said, “With this certification, the safety of our biometric data protection framework has received international recognition,” adding, “We will always put user protection first and provide safer, more trusted services.”
